‘Cracking the Code’ winners

On Thursday 21 June 2018, four pupils – Jonathan Affleck, Carrie Brown, Joshua Hanover and Kelly Price – travelled to London to participate in the finals of the national Carcking the Code competition. Another member of the team, Alex Sayle, played a large part in the project but was unable to travel. They created and designed the idea for a brand new escape room.  They had to come up with the back story, the characters and the actual puzzles that would be in the escape room.

114 schools registered nationally and of the 91 entries entered, our pupils were short listed into the top ten. They were flown to London in order to deliver their idea to a panel of business professionals.  They created a powerpoint, shot a short video, created an exemplar of one of their puzzles and delivered a ten minute presentation to the panel.

The judges were unanimous in their decision that their team, HMS Supernova,  were selected as the winners.  The judges stated that they were confident young people, their ideas were superb but that they managed to communicate their ideas effectively and that they are a real credit and role models for our school.  They particularly mentioned how strong a team they were and how well they worked with one another.

They have won £2000 for new maths programmes for the school and also (which we are very excited about) the opportunity for Nesta to come and build part of the escape room here at the academy for all our students to experience.

Well done to the team, and thank you to Miss Weir and Mr Cruickshanks for accompanying them to London.
