Modern Languages and the World of Work

On Thursday 22 November all our S3 pupils attended presentations from local business leaders and former EA pupils about the importance of foreign languages for work and for personal purposes. We had speakers from Walkers Shortbread (“trading globally, using other languages can make a difference in sealing a deal”), Johnstons of Elgin, Hannah Levy (former AH French student at EA, now working as a tour guide for GlenMoray distillery after one year au pairing in France), Devon Conti (on video: former H French student at EA, now  in second year Biochemistry in Glasgow: “opportunities in science are greater thanks to my fluency in French and Italian”), and videos by Judi Murray (importance of language skills when dealing with the media or coaching), an Edinburgh dentist (dealing with many French and German residents, it is important to get it right…), and an SFA representative (languages skills for coaching and selecting players).

Our S3 pupils were then asked to note one thing they had learnt about languages and the responses were overwhelmingly positive, eg “ languages can make it easier to get a (better) job”, “not everyone speaks English”, “learning 1 language helps you learn more of them”, “I did not know there were so many jobs that required languages”, “learning a foreign language can boost your confidence”.
