Cracking the Code

Team HMS Supernova recently entered and won the UK national competition Cracking the Code.  Five students – Josh, Carrie, Kelly, Jonathan and Lexi – came up with a concept, room design and puzzles for an escape room.  They were short listed and invited to London in order to present their idea to a panel of professionals, where they were crowned National Crack the Code Winners 2018. Part of the prize, and probably the most exciting part, is that their escape room was brought to life here at Elgin Academy.  For one week only, HMS Supernova Escape Room was open to students, staff and guests – creating a magnificent buzz around the school.  Students competed within the academy in all subject areas, in order to win tickets. To believe and try something new and different, is courageous and makes us extremely proud of Josh, Carrie, Kelly, Jonathan and Lexi.  Very much an innovative and hardworking team, this is an exciting opportunity for all our young people to realise that if they work hard, there are great rewards out there.

Modern Languages and the World of Work

On Thursday 22 November all our S3 pupils attended presentations from local business leaders and former EA pupils about the importance of foreign languages for work and for personal purposes. We had speakers from Walkers Shortbread (“trading globally, using other languages can make a difference in sealing a deal”), Johnstons of Elgin, Hannah Levy (former AH French student at EA, now working as a tour guide for GlenMoray distillery after one year au pairing in France), Devon Conti (on video: former H French student at EA, now  in second year Biochemistry in Glasgow: “opportunities in science are greater thanks to my fluency in French and Italian”), and videos by Judi Murray (importance of language skills when dealing with the media or coaching), an Edinburgh dentist (dealing with many French and German residents, it is important to get it right…), and an SFA representative (languages skills for coaching and selecting players).

Our S3 pupils were then asked to note one thing they had learnt about languages and the responses were overwhelmingly positive, eg “ languages can make it easier to get a (better) job”, “not everyone speaks English”, “learning 1 language helps you learn more of them”, “I did not know there were so many jobs that required languages”, “learning a foreign language can boost your confidence”.

School show – Little Shop of Horrors

Elgin Academy is pleased to present our upcoming musical production ‘Little Shop of Horrors’.  This sci-fi horror musical with a killer soundtrack follows its unlikely hero Seymour who works in a flower shop attending to a plant which he has named Audrey II (after the love of his life, Audrey). However, this isn’t your average house plant. It came from outer space during a total eclipse of the sun and requires a diet of fresh blood!  Seymour starts by giving the plant his own blood, but this isn’t enough. The plant always wants more…  This whole school musical is made up of a fantastically talented cast of pupils from S1-S6 and the production team is comprised of a tireless group of both pupils and staff from across the school.  The performances will take place in the assembly hall in Elgin Academy on Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th of December 2018 at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm.  Tickets can be purchased within the school daily from 1.10 – 1.55pm, in the hall or on the door each night.  Adults-£8, Children/Concessions-£6 & children under 5-free.
