Your First Day at the Academy

The School Day- Morning Assembly

Your first day at the Academy will begin with an assembly in the hall, where the Head Teacher,  will welcome you.

During the session you will go to an assembly from time to time.  Normally this will last for no more than fifteen to twenty minutes.  You may be given news of school events and important information, or perhaps hear about pupils who have worked particularly hard to help the school or people in the community.  Occasionally, you might be told about some ways in which you can improve your work or behaviour.  Sometimes, too, assemblies will be taken by one of the school chaplains.

Registration

The first ten minutes of every day will be spent in registration.  Here you will be registered for the day and will have the pupil bulletin read to you.  This has important information about what is going on in the Academy.  Copies of the notices for pupils are also put on notice-boards around the school.  You should give any notes for absences or appointments to your register teacher.

There is also a weekly bulletin for pupils which is put up on the notice-boards on Monday mornings.  This has important information and you should always check it carefully.

Intervals

After the second period you will have a fifteen minute break from classes.  During this interval you must not leave the school grounds.  You should use the interval to go to the toilets.  If you want, you can go to the canteen where snacks are on sale, or use the vending machines which are situated in the canteen, the hall and the main foyer. You are allowed to spend the interval in the canteen or the hall, especially if the weather is wet or cold.  In good weather, though, you will probably want to go outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Lunch Time

You have the choice either to go home at lunchtime, or stay and have your lunch in school.  In the canteen, for the first few days pupils in First Year will be allowed to go first in the queue for lunch.  A full two-course lunch will cost you about £1.65.  If you want you can buy just one course, or you can buy a snack.  Some pupils prefer to bring their own packed lunch.  If you want to do this you should go to the hall to eat your lunch.  Some of you are entitled to free school meals.  Your parents can find out more about this in the yellow pages at the back of this booklet.

After Lunch

When you have finished your lunch, you will have some time to yourself.  You can play in the school grounds, or you might like to join one of the lunchtime clubs.  You are allowed to leave the school grounds at lunchtime, but the school cannot take responsibility for you if you do.  Again, if the weather is cold or wet, you can stay in the canteen or the hall.
