Administration Departments Elgin Academy Pupil Zone Working Groups Visitors

Links South Africa

The aim of this organization is to link international nations through knowledge in schools as the name reveals. At its heart, is to promote education within schools. Any pupil from any year in the school is eligible to join - the organization being self funded. Pupils indulge in experiencing the South African culture e.g. day trips to museums and safaris - as well as learning about the South African education system.

The founder

Mr Tsotsi of the RE department was responsible for setting this organization, along with Mr Lunyawo (headmaster) of a South African school in Fantique. Pupils who have been out to South Africa are Sharon, Emma, Yvonne, Ross, John, Roisin.

Teachers from Elgin Academy who have been out to South Africa include Mr Cruickshanks (Technical), Mr Grant (English), Mrs Reid (Chemistry), Mr Valentine (English).

A typical trip to South Africa would be two weeks where 4 days are spent in Cape Town, 8 days in East London and approximately four days in Port Elizabeth. East London is where the South African school, twinned with Elgin Academy is found - in a local Township, called Mdantsane.

Roisin (6th year) who recently went out to South Africa comments:-

" I really learnt how much these African children wanted to be at school for an education - everyone valued this tremendously. All pupils were neatly dressed in their uniforms, and they were not enough tables and chairs for each pupil - lots crammed around one table. Discipline was tight - the belt was still being used. Oh yes, and they all had to supply their own jotters which i found amazing! "

Roisin adored and cherished her experience so much that she aims to return with the program in the Summer of 2007. Roisin stayed with the Nomzi family (Ms Nomzi being the assistant head in South Africa). She was treated well and given generous helpings of food.

What were the treasured memories which stay in Roisin's mind - she reveals:-

1. The Wimpy burgers were nice. Also the traditional dish called Mushi which is made from curdled milk and rice.

2. Lots of cockroaches - horrible at first, but I got used to them.

3. Playing with Lion Cubs in the sanctuary.

The organization continually goes from strength to strength - the logo where the Scottish and South African flags intertwine truly represent the aim of this superb organization.
