On Friday, 3rd September 2008, a group of third year Chemistry students from Elgin Academy attended a talk on fuels and hydrocarbons by Dr James 'Paraffin' Young. He enlightened the pupils with his in-depth knowledge of the geological formation of oil, fractional distillation, alkanes and alkenes and the modern petroleum industry. The presentation was part of the annual "TechFest" festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics taking place across the north east of Scotland between the 7th and the 27th of September.
