Director’s Note
Noises Off is the first school production in Elgin Academy for 10 years and it was felt a suitably ambitious text should be selected to act, not only as a vehicle for the talent within Elgin Academy but to challenge and educate the pupils further, not least about the world of theatre. What better than to produce this comic, play within a play within a play, revealing the extreme trials and tribulations of touring a theatre production.
Although led by the Drama department, the production invited participation from the whole school, demonstrated not least by including performers and crew from S1-S6, as well as featuring collaborative curricular work completed in the Art and Drama departments…I refer you to the Noises Off logo produced by S2123 in Art & Design.
The process began in February this year where a series of activities and meetings were organised, resulting in staff and pupil committees being produced, to assist in the realisation of Noises Off. After a series of auditions, including exercises examining team work and aspects of an effective contributor, a final cast list was produced and since then pupils and staff have all worked assiduously bringing the show to fruition.
Elgin Academy are very pleased to have had the fantastic support from external agencies also, notably the leading construction company, Mansell for designing and constructing the set supported by Speyside Scaffolding and R G Wilson (Elgin) Ltd., and also Gleaner Oils for their financial contribution to the event and Coleburn Productions (sound and lighting equipment).
Noises off has been a huge undertaking and it has been most pleasing to see the pupils grow in confidence, take responsibility for their assigned tasks and achieve success which will be evident in their performance tonight.
It has been a delight working with pupils who have shown exceptional commitment, enthusiasm and motivation. The same could certainly be said for the staff whose collaboration and support has been instrumental in creating a production which will live in the memory of pupils long after they leave Elgin Academy.
Heartfelt thanks go to cast, crew and supporters of Noises Off.

A review by Mr AH Rossetter (DHT) for The Northern Scot:
Noises Off – The first school show to be staged in Elgin Academy for 10 years proved a great success. Playing to full houses last Thursday and Friday evenings, “Noises off,” a farce by Michael Frayn, provided first class entertainment. From the moment the audience arrived at the school, to be greeted by pupils in the role of papparazi, the scene was set for an evening of fun and laughter. A huge amount of effort on the part of staff and pupils had gone into the show; the school is grateful for the support of a range of sponsors, including Mansell Construction, who provided the excellent set. The decision of the drama department, who produced and directed the show, to have a different cast each evening allowed a wide range of pupils to participate. Despite it being an ambitious and demanding production, the cast rose to the challenge and turned in impressive performances on both evenings. (Not to be outdone, staff too had supporting roles, turning up in such varied guises as cleaners and cowboys!) The standing ovation at the end of both evenings attested both the quality of the show and the audiences’ appreciation of it.
