Who comes to the Academy

Pupils from Burghead Primary are zoned for either Elgin Academy or Lossiemouth High School and may choose which to attend.

A small number of pupils in certain parts of the catchment areas of

                        Alves Primary

                        Hopeman Primary

                        Lhanbryde Primary

may also be zoned for Elgin Academy.

Pupils from St Sylvester's Primary normally attend the secondary school within whose catchment area they live.

N.B.  All primary and secondary pupils who live more than 2 miles from their school will be provided with free transport if that is their local catchment school.  Door-to-door transport is not guaranteed.  In certain instances, children may be required to walk up to 2 miles as appropriate.

Joining the Academy

You will probably be quite excited about joining a new school - but may also have some worries.  If you do have any worries it is probably because you don't know what happens at Elgin Academy. Also, there is a Parents' Evening   when your parents can visit the school, see round the subject departments and ask questions of guidance staff and senior management with regard to matters that are of particular interest to you.

If you have not already met the guidance teacher who keeps in touch with your primary school, you soon will.  He or she will visit your primary school and answer any questions you still have.  You will meet them again when you visit the Academy twice in the summer term.

On your first visit we will show you around the school.  You will see all the different kinds of classrooms and you will meet some of your new teachers.

On your second visit, when you will come for a whole day, you will be told which class and which house you will be in.   There are five houses - Gordon, Innes, Moray, Randolph and Seafield - with a Principal Teacher of Guidance for each.  If you have any brothers or sisters at the Academy you will normally be in the same house as them.  You will meet your own guidance teacher and follow a sample timetable for a few periods.

That same evening, your parents will be able to come to a meeting in the Academy, when we will give them more information about the school and answer any questions they have.  Senior pupils will show them round and serve coffee.

When you come on your first "proper" day at the Academy in August, we want to help you settle in as quickly and as easily as possible.  After you have been welcomed to the school,  you will then be with your guidance teacher for the first part of the morning.  Your guidance teacher will give you any information you need, help you to find your way around and answer any questions you have.  You will join your class later where you will be given your timetable.   An interval (playtime) has been arranged for the first year only and at lunchtime you will have first sitting in the dining hall.

Everyone in the Academy is interested in you and wants you to be happy and successful here.
